Burnham Beeches Half Marathon

My last time of running this event was in 1998 before the internet was used to record results so not able to remember what I did previously. In those days you got printed results sent to your home address and I have decluttered many times so not a chance of seeing my time from the last century. Also with a 20-year gap my memory of the course was non-existent except for the start and the finish line in the school grounds.
I hadn’t planned to run this but on looking at my training notes the 12 Aug is a 12 miler day. So I searched for a half marathon and Burnham was the only one locally. However, it was also fully booked and entries closed. Not to be put off I dropped them a line 4 weeks ago asking about a reserve list and they offered me a place there and then! So never be put off if an event says it’s full.
The weather looked as though it would be a very wet day but this was proven to be wrong and there were a few spots of rain for about 5 mins and that was it.
The event was very well organised with so many marshals and ample parking (20 min walk away but useful for a leg stretch). Plenty of toilets both indoors and out. Changing rooms, showers, free use of the pool afterwards, bacon & burger stall, the local pub had a decent sized tent with a good range of soft & alcoholic drinks, massage tables and a very efficient baggage hall. For the family, there was a non-stop Punch and Judy show plus an adventure apparatus.
Finishers received a medal, tee shirt, banana, snack bars, crisps and water bottles and no congestion at the finish.
The course is on closed roads and very undulating. Most of the route is under the tree canopy so if the sun had been out it would have offered protection.
The only thing I struggled with where the water stations. Fully stocked but had water pouches which are environmentally friendly etc. You squeeze them to get the water out but easier said than done. The contents were generous enough so maybe it was just me – still better than cups though.
Overall a lovely event which took just over an hour to get to and not far from Beaconsfield services so very useful to use that for a pit stop before arriving.
Definitely, recommend for 2019 and entries are now open
