Edinburgh Marathon Festival

All the races have been brilliantly organised, great routes, scenic, perfect weather and now we’re sitting in the sunshine with our beers.

Lots of PBs this weekend and fantastic atmosphere. Great support from the half and marathoners yesterday for those doing the 5k and 10k and we returned the favour today. The 5k and 10k was a beautiful, if a little hilly, route! The 1km climb was a bit of a killer, but rewarded by the most fun long downhill to just let go and enjoy the rewards! And a 1km downhill to finish was also brilliant.

Sam Upton   ‘it was out of this amazing* world’ *amazing may not have been the most polite word Sam used, so I kept it friendly.

Well-organised – fast, overall downhill course.

Jade Howlett          ‘Cane the downhills, then hang on for the last 8miles’ (how to get a PB in the half!)

All in all a brilliant, fun weekend with fantastic people and lots of socialising too (of course!)

So four runners set off for Hook, 3 got to run! Matthew Lock was intending to use Chris Miles’ number but there was nothing on the terms and conditions about exchanging numbers. Two emails to the organisers to clarify the issue were sent with no response. So we turned up and Matthew went to speak to the organisers. He was bluntly told he could not swap the number and it was taken from him. Shocking way to treat a fellow runner, especially as he could have just run and not said anything. Instead he was punished for his honesty and the lack of info from the organisers.

Before this we had arrived in Hook and only managed to find the car park because we had sat nav. There were no signs and no marshals. We left the car park for the race village, again no signs or directions. It was only because I had been here 10 years ago that I had a vague recollection of where to go and a kind local pointed us in the right direction.

The weather was warm and sunny and the course was undulating. The marshals were some of the most miserable marshals I’ve come across in 35 years of running (Heaven knows what they would have been like if it had been raining and cold). A 100+ mile round trip for a poorly organised race with sullen marshals, well I know three runners who won’t be going back next year.

Oxfordshire Athletics County Championships

My fascination with track running continued this weekend with my first ever County Champs races. Having seen the start list I knew I wasn’t going to be disturbing the podium but I was there to race the clock.

Saturday afternoon was the 1500m and the rain duly arrived at Horspath just as I did. By the time I raced lane 1 was awash and I was soaked to the skin before the first bend! I kept pushing as the others disappeared into the distance and was rewarded with a PB of nearly 5 seconds.

The I returned on Sunday afternoon under much sunnier skies to take on the 800m. With my hamstrings still a little tight from the 1500m I was there to hunt for another PB. Fortunately I had an Oxford City runner within my grasp so chasing him kept me pushing hard. I was 8 seconds ahead of target after the first lap (gulp!) and clung on to beat my PB by 9 second.

It was great to see Joe Godwood back from Uni to race for Witney and to both cheer on, and be cheered on by the juniors. It might seem like a lot of effort for less than 8 minutes of running but it great fun to push myself out of the comfort zone. If anyone fancies testing themselves over some short distances then let me know and I can point you in the direction of some races and some training ideas.

Which of our two fabulous races does the running community love more?!

🦆 Are you a fan of the fast, flat 5km at the edge of Ducklington? Our new duck on the block - The Duck Dash.

🏃🏻‍♀️ Or are you more of a Classic runner? The established, ‘fundulating’ 10miler with the fab swag (shirt & beer!) waiting for you at the end after you’ve conquered Hillzakilla in the middle - The Cotswold Classic.

We can’t choose between them so it’s time to put your X in the box and choose.

Comment below with a 🦆 or a 🏃🏻‍♀️ for your favourite and tell us why!
