Parkruns and Triathlon in Australia
The ITU World Final Championship, which includes age groupers was being held on the Gold Coast, Australia. As I had qualified for this event in Rotterdam last year, we decided to have a three week holiday with the last week on the Gold Coast near the triathlon.
Being in Australia for three weeks meant three Parkrundays (Saturdays) at different venues. The first was Rhodes Park in Sydney where our hotel, less than a mile from Parkrun was on the edge of the venues for the 2000 Olympic Games. It was interesting to see that these facilities are being well used.
For the following Parkrunday we stayed at Yamba and about an hour before the start there was a horrendous downpour which may have resulted in only sixteen runners. Looking at them, Judith asked me if I knew the route! From the off I was out in front, something I have never done before! A whole new set of thoughts going through my head, I now know what Tegs, Sam, Matt and others go through when leading a race. We ended up 1st and 4th.
Our third Parkrun was at Main Beach on the Gold Coast the first Parkrun in Australia and another stunning location by the beach. With 400+ runners no chance of another 1st place!
We had arrived on the Gold Coast on Tuesday morning ready for the GB Team briefing and photo in the afternoon. I had also entered the Gold Coast Open Aquathlon event, 750m swim and 5km run the day before the triathlon.
Needless to say I was in a right panic on Wednesday, register for both events, rack bike for the triathlon, set up transition for the Aquathlon before competing. The sea was quite choppy for the swim and in the bright sunshine it wasn’t easy to see where to go but thankfully it wasn’t that crowded. Out on the two lap 5km run course it was hot and I could see that I was pulling away from the other two GB “oldies”. Other than that I had no idea who else was a V65.
I was more than pleased to have come 2nd V65 and now had to register and rack my bike for tomorrow. The queue to register was horrendously long and I just managed to register before the Aquathlon medal presentation on the podium.
There were thousands of bikes being racked in the transition area luckily I was four bikes from the end in my row, how could I fail to find it!
Race day and all was calm, bike found, shoes set out, all ready to go.
The swim started OK but there was carnage around the first and second buoy as ever!
The bike was “draft legal” which should make it faster when cycling in a group and therefore important to ride with others. After a couple of miles I was with a group of four and we were flying along at about 25mph wheel to wheel – quite exciting. Two of the four sat at the back and left it to an Australian and myself to lead round the bike course. “Damm you can run” said the Australian to me as I ran past him going out onto the run. As usual in triathlon my running pulls me through the field and I was pleased to finish 13th overall out of 63 and 4th GB in the World Age Group Championships, VM65 category.
