After a few of us ran Maverick Cotswold back in May so we thought we should do another one when it’s colder and muddier! A well organised event across the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside starting and finishing at Stoner Park. The best way to describe these types of races is to picture cross country but twice the steepest gradient, 2.5 times the distance, four times the elevation and ten times the pain the next day. Your non-running friends, family and work colleagues question your sanity, as do you as your calves start to burn as you attempt to trot up the umpteenth hill, but that doesn’t stop you doing it and telling yourself you love it!
The first 6-ish miles consisted of three long hills. The second half of the race was very technical with a constant changing terrain and short sharp hills. I think we all found the second half tougher as unlike road racing such as at Eynsham last weekend, you cannot maintain a rhythm. The terrain won’t let you!
In conclusion, if you like hills, mud and pain (for the record, ‘like’ is an oversimplification; more accurately I’d say I now have an acceptable tolerance to hills) then this is the race for you. If not stick to cross country which is still tough but your fellow supporting Witney Road Runners and the thought of cake will get you through!
