WRR League Info
2024 League
With the success of the 2023 league (56 league finishers), the only changes being made for 2024 are additional race options:
– a few extra races added in
– two wild card options – for both half-marathon and marathon races (subject to the usual license requirements).
It is all about having fun and maximising WRR participation across our local running races.
The goal for 2024 is to get 60 league finishers.

League Rules
- Scoring. The 2024 league will continue to use age-gradings to score and rank all WRR runs. See below for more information on age-gradings.
-
- Only official times will be used (chip times when available).
- We will calculate the age-grading for each WRR runner (using the race distance, runner age & gender). The dataset used for these calculations is recent, and consistent with that used for 2023. So, exact numbers may differ very slightly from the age-gradings produced in race results (if they use a different dataset).
- Each runner’s score for that race will be their age-grading (e.g. 60.0% age-grading = 60.0 score). Remember, higher score is better!
- Overall league scoring. At the end of the season, each runner’s total score for the league will be calculated as follows:
- Total (sum) of their best scores (up to 10 races maximum)
- League prizes will be based on total score.
- We anticipate that prizes will be awarded based on top n total scores (across all runners, regardless of gender or age).
- Results. All league scores will be published as soon as possible after each league race (to the newsletter, web site, social media, etc. as appropriate).
- League completion. Runners need to run at least 8 races in order to complete the league and qualify for a league memento.
- These 8 races can be any of those included in the league race list. There are no first half/second half requirements.
- We will announce the memento early in 2024 to encourage as much participation as possible!
- Note: your total score for the league can include up to 10 races, so running an extra 2 will boost your total score!
- Wild card races.
- Individuals must submit their own wild card race results within 2 weeks of the race.
- For added fun, runners cannot replace a wild card result with a subsequent, better one.
- Other rules.
- Runners must wear WRR club vest/t-shirt (no training tops).
- Runners must not run in the name of another runner.
- Runners need to be fully paid up first-claim WRR members to qualify for league memento or any prize in the overall league standings.
- For inclusion in the league, races must have appropriate race license (e.g. UKA).
- All the usual EA rules (where applicable) apply.
Age-Grading Scores
The use of age-grading scores as a means to measure and compare races has become well established in recent years. Anyone who has run at a parkrun event is most likely already familiar with the concept. The age-grading score is simply a percentage score that reflects your performance for a given run – that takes into account age, sex and distance.
It gives us the ability to get a personalised score for each race that is independent of other participants in that race. Because the score takes age and gender into account it also lets us rank all runners alongside each other.
The benefits of using an age-grading system to score the club league include:
- Making it easier for individuals to measure their performances and set individual Age-grading scores are personal – runners can set their own goals in terms of target score.
- Injecting a bit of fun into the league and provide some interesting competition between all club members (removing the limits of only competing against those in your specific age category)!
- Comparison of scores for each runner from season to season will make it easier to highlight improvement.
