Centurion Autumn 100 Mile Race

A 100 mile trail race based in the twinned villages of Goring & Streatley on the River Thames. Takes runners on 4 different 25 mile out-and-back spurs, using sections of the Ridgeway and Thames Path National Trails

Rachel Stanley-Evans 21.42.12 4th Lady & 3rd LV40

Well done Craig who ran the last 50 miles with Rachel

Centurion A100 Race Report

So how do you describe such an enormous achievement as the success that Rachel Stanley-Evans accomplished this weekend?  I thought the sub 2hr marathon was something to behold but having the privilege of witnessing Rachel run the Centurion A100 this weekend, in my view is even more impressive than Eliud!  The weather was a very significant factor battering the runners of the A100, with over 80 of the 230 runners retiring from the race.  Not our Rachel.  She had her difficult moments, particularly when the sodden muddy trails became almost impossible to run and the cold set in but she just dug deep and did something truly amazing to finish as 4th women in her first 100 mile race.  As always she set herself an ambitious target of sub 22 hours and smashed it crossing the line on 21hrs 42mins! She actually passed the 100 mile marker in 21hrs 30mins exactly (the course was long)!

The Centurion A100 Race is a trail race that takes runners on a series of 4 different 25 mile out and back spurs starting from Goring and Streatley.  Sitting in the Village Hall, waiting for Rachel to arrive with my PACER number pinned to my shorts, I felt like a nervous patient in a dentist’s waiting room!  Rachel arrived an hour ahead of schedule (obvs), full of energy and determination, having completed a very fast 50 miles.   She swept me up and we headed out onto the Ridgeway for miles 50 to 75 of the race.  Within a couple of hours of running, it was dark and we had to switch our head torches on.  It was quite a sight to see so many lone head torches bobbing about on the Ridgeway.  Rachel was in good spirits and we had plenty of chatter.

Our final leg headed back out from Goring to Reading along the hilly Thames Path (who knew)!  This was a really tough leg (a lot less chatter).  The muddy conditions meant we struggled to run and that meant walking in the heavy rain and getting very, very cold. This was the ‘wobble’ moment for us and where many runners admitted defeat and retired but we knew that if we could get to the halfway point, get a hot drink and turn around and head for home we would finish. The final leg ended up being negative splits!

Rachel was awarded with the coveted One Day Centurion Buckle for completing the race in less than 24 hours.  A very special medal for an extremely challenging race awarded to an outstanding endurance athlete!  Enough said.

I know that Rachel wanted me to thank the great support she had over the weekend, which included Lisa Butler-Jackson, Lucy Harris, Toby Clarke (BBC correspondent), Nick Morley and then Charlie Stanley-Evans and Lindsey Smith who covered the night shift and kept popping up throughout the night to offer desperately needed encouragement.  The legendary WRR support machine in action!

It’s voting time! There’s an important one on It’s voting time! There’s an important one on Thursday, but here at WRR HQ we need your help to solve a ‘debate’

Which of our two fabulous races does the running community love more?!

🦆 Are you a fan of the fast, flat 5km at the edge of Ducklington? Our new duck on the block - The Duck Dash.

🏃🏻‍♀️ Or are you more of a Classic runner? The established, ‘fundulating’ 10miler with the fab swag (shirt & beer!) waiting for you at the end after you’ve conquered Hillzakilla in the middle - The Cotswold Classic.

We can’t choose between them so it’s time to put your X in the box and choose.

Comment below with a 🦆 or a 🏃🏻‍♀️ for your favourite and tell us why!

Share to increase the sample size and improve the validity of our very official study! 🤓
