Race report for Woodstock 12
An earlier than normal start at Blenheim (10am) which was most welcome as the temperature was just right including a small breeze and also not too many tourists around. For those who haven’t done this course it is basically 3 x 4 mile undulating loops and not really a lot of flat road. The hill sections are ok but on lap 2 and 3 they really start to suck the energy out of you and no matter how much energy you try and put into reserve it doesn’t quite work.
A good turnout for WRR as we had 10 runners altogether (6 male & 4 female).
Just prior to the start in strolls Sam Upton who decided to run a 14 miler to Blenheim before taking part and then went on to be the first WRR to finish – hats off to you to complete a total of 26.6 miles with an avg pace of 6:46, utterly insane !
Having run this event for the last 2 years my intention was to put in a pb for the course so a sensible first lap was the order of the day which went really well and I was surrounded by the usual faces I see at other races and I didn’t expect myself to be in front of Matthew Lock but he was on a different strategy and saving his legs to beat his Dad on the Longworth 10k. Just before 6 miles my race tactic changed for the worse as my legs decided to go off somewhere else never to be seen again. I went from running to plodding and all the regular faces disappeared into the distance on the pleasant uphills and the downward stretches. It was at this time I focused my attention on the rear of other running clubs tops as loads were going past me and i knew exactly who they were and it made me realise that we don’t have any reference to WRR on ours – so yes my race was not going to plan and my concentration was elsewhere. The non WRR markings were proven to be true when Paul Ainslie breezed by as no identity on the shirt and confirmed when Matthew and Lindsey also went by in the final mile. Matthew did ask me if I needed club points but I sent him on his way as i would only hold him up.
I dug in and finished with a course personal worst so the complete opposite to my intentions but we all have a poor race at some point so hopefully this was mine for the season – either that or its the start of my slippery slope
We did have great support (and very much appreciated) from WRR non runners and families around the course and greeted with amazing chocolate cakes at the end – so it was all worth it.

A cool overcast morning for the1500 + runners. A very gently undulating course that lends itself to fast times. Superbly organised and staffed by some of the most friendly marshalls I’ve seen in a long time. Also a fantastic goody bag. Well worth the money and the journey.
